SUMMARY:Memorial Day Service & Bell-Ringing
DESCRIPTION:Dana Meeting House will host a Memorial Day Service with Rev. Campbell Lovett of Holderness.  Rev. Lovett will lead a meditation and prayer service. DESCRIPTION:The Dana Meeting House Association will host an evening of Wild Edibles of New Hampshire with Dr.Rick Van de Poll on Tuesday June 11 th from 5:30-7 at the Dana Meeting House on Dana Hill Road in New Hampton. \nhe Meeting and presentation are free and open to the public.\nDr. Rick Van de Poll will give a colourful slide show to introduce participants to the common plants and mushrooms that have been used for centuries by Europeans and Natives alike. Dr. Van de Poll is a botanist and mycologist with several decades of experience in wildcrafting and preparing a variety of wild edible and medicinal plants and fungi. He has taught courses in both subjects since 1977 to students of all ages and helped found two mushroom clubs in N.H. Reference works will be reviewed and a special soup for the day will be prepared for optional sampling. This will be followed by a short\, easy hike around Dana Meeting House in search of what is out and identifiable. SUMMARY:2024 Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Dana Meeting House Association will hold its third Annual Meeting on Saturday June 8 from 3:30-6 pm at the Dana Meeting House at 288 Dana Hill Road in New Hampton\, New Hampshire followed by a presentation with Stone Wall historian\, teacher\, and actor\, Kevin\nGardner. The Meeting and presentation are free and open to the public and this event is sponsored by New Hampshire Humanities to Go. \nThere will be a business meeting\, election of officers and refreshments from 3:30-4:30. \nThe meeting is open to the public and is a great time to learn more about the Dana Meeting House and sign up to be a volunteer for the Summer 2024 season. Thomas Smith\, President\, will lead the meeting with updates from others including Greg Flowers\, Treasurer\, Bill Huckins\, Vice President and Board Members\, Blair Folts and Nick and Lucienne Brown. The position of Secretary is open and attendees will be invited to consider volunteering for this seat. Summer\neditions of the Newsletter will be on hand as will the summer event schedule. Attendees are invited to bring ideas or questions for further promotion of the Dana Meeting House. \nFollowing the business meeting\, Kevin Gardner will give a presentation on Finding New England Stone Walls. Kevin’s informal talk covers a few of the main topics of his book about New England stone walls\, The Granite Kiss (Countryman Press)\, touching on history\, technique\, stylistic development\, and aesthetics. He explains how and why New\nEngland came to acquire its thousands of miles of stone walls\, the ways in which they and other dry stone structures were built\, how their styles emerged and changed over time\, and their significance to the famous New England landscape. Other topics may include: differences in approach between historical and contemporary wall-builders\, a\ndiscussion of restoration tips and techniques\, and information about design\, acquisition of materials\, preservation\, and analysis. There is always a generous question-and-answer period\, during which listeners are encouraged to bring up specific problems or projects on their own properties. \nDuring the presentation\, Kevin occupies himself by building a miniature wall or walls on a tabletop\, using tiny stones from a five-gallon bucket. It is a fascinating way to connect viewers to his talk and everyone will leave with new knowledge about the stone walls we all love. \nKevin Gardner is a lifelong resident of Hopkinton\, NH. Like many independent rural Yankees\, he’s been a jack of many trades\, a builder\, logger\, writer\, teacher\, radio voice\, even an actor and director. For more than forty years he has been a stone wall builder in a family business widely known for traditional New England stonework\, particularly for historic restoration of antique structures. \nCome learn more about the Dana Meeting House and Association. Dana Meeting House Association is a 501c3 formed in 2019 to protect\, preserve and promote the historic Dana Meeting House in New Hampton\, New Hampshire. Construction of this building began in 1800 and was first used in 1802 by the Freewill Baptist movement. It was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. \nDMHA is especially grateful to New Hampshire Humanities to Go for sponsorship of this unique event. SUMMARY:New Hampshire’s One Room School Houses-the Romance and the Reality
DESCRIPTION:Historic presentation by Stephen Taylor on New Hampshire’s One Room School Houses-the Romance and the Reality. Hundreds of one-room schools dotted the landscape of New Hampshire a century ago and were the backbone of primary education for generations of children. Revered in literature and lore\, they actually were beset with problems\, some of which are little changed today. Steve Taylor is farmer\, writer and longtime scholar of the state’s rural history and culture. \nWe are grateful to “NH Humanities to Go” program\, the co-sponsor of this event.

SUMMARY:13\,000 Years Ago in the Granite State
DESCRIPTION:Historic Presentation by Archaeologist Dr. Robert Goodby\nMore than 13\,000 years ago\, small groups of Paleoindians endured frigid winters on the edge of a small river in what would become Keene\, New Hampshire. In 2009\, an archaeological survey for the new Keene Middle school discovered the remains of their stay and brought to light one of the oldest Native American sites in New England. The remarkably intact site produced evidence of four separate dwellings containing over 200 stone tools and fragments of burned animal bone. These early people\, rather than being isolated stone-age nomads\, were part of a social network that extended across much of northeastern North America.

SUMMARY:New England's Colonial Meeting Houses and Their Impact on American Society
DESCRIPTION:Our program will be at the Dana Meeting House\, included in the National Register of Historic Places in 2000\, and the only one of its kind in New Hampshire. Our guests will have a chance to experience sitting in an antique box pew and  listening to a speaker the way our ancestors did. The Association’s Board is  dedicated to protecting and preserving this fine example of 19th century architecture\,  and invites our program attendees to come and “gather”.   \nNew England’s colonial meetinghouses embody an important yet little- known  chapter in American history. Built mostly with tax money\, they served as both  places of worship and for town meetings\, and were the centers of life in colonial New  England communities. Using photographs of the few surviving “mint condition”  meetinghouses as illustrations\, our presenter tells the story of the society that built  and used them\, and the lasting impact they have had on American culture.   \nPresenter Paul Wainwright has a long-standing interest in photography and a love of history. He is especially drawn to photographing historic structures in very personal  and introspective ways. His work is included in the permanent collections of collectors  including the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover\, NH and the Boston  Public Library\, and his first published photography book: “A Space for Faith: The  Colonial Meetinghouses of New England” was released in early 2010.   \nThe Historical Society thanks New Hampshire Humanities for providing our 2021-2022  Presenters and Programs.   \nOur programs are free and open to the public. \nDownload Flyer
